The Sporting Upper Limb Course
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Describe common hand injuries in the athletic population and perform key diagnostic tests for specific conditions.
- Describe common injuries in the throwing shoulder including, pathomechanics, diagnosis and management principles.
- Perform a clinical assessment including kinetic chain examination and develop an individualised rehabilitation programme for a throwing athlete.
- Describe common shoulder injuries in the ‘collision’ athlete including pathomechanics, diagnosis and acute management.
- Perform a clinical assessment and develop an individualised rehabilitation programme for a ‘collision’ athlete.
- Demonstrate assessment of, and progressive rehabilitation programme for neuromuscular function of the unstable shoulder
- Discuss return-to-sport considerations and decision-making processes including the use of physical performance tests, load management and psychosocial factors.
- Demonstrate physical performance tests used in return-to-sport planning and discuss current evidence.
Course Content
The course includes the following content:
Pathomechanics of upper limb injury
Performance-related functional tests
Diagnostic tests
Imaging
Design and implementation of rehabilitation programmes including criteria for rehabilitation progressions
Integration with coaching and biomechanics for technique modifications.
Pacing and conditioning considerations for return to training and return-to sport
Return-to-sport decision making.
The following topics will be covered:
Subacromial pain/conditions (swimmers shoulder)
GIRD and micro-instability (throwing/racquet sports)
Dislocations/labral tears/fractures (contact sports)
Multi-directional instability (applies to many sports)
Common wrist injuries in sport
The following topics will be covered:
Finger dislocations and tendon injuries (Level 1 – Sideline Management Course)
Thumb (UCL) injuries (Level 1 – Sideline Management Course)
Adolescent injuries: these are intended to be covered in the Level 2 course – Sports Physiotherapy for Special Populations
